WILLIA M H. JAYNE, one of Lincoln county's most progressive and enterp risin g citizens, is a contractor and builder, residing at Davenport. He w a s born in Wyoming county, Pennsylvania, November 21, 1847, the son o f Aar on and Mary C. (Luce) Jayne, the former a native of Pennsylvania , the latt er of New York. Aaron Jayne came from one of the oldest En glish famili es in the Keystone State. William Jayne, an ancestor, ca me to America sev eral years before the advent of William Penn. Twent y-eight of his descend ants were grouped in one regiment during the Re volution. He lived and di ed on Long Island, where he was buried. Hi s descendants settled in Connec ticut, New York and Pennsylvania. Aar on Jayne, the father of our subjec t, was a farmer. Owing to ill healt h he could not enlist in the Civil Wa r, but was drafted and secure d a substitute without having been examine d, which examination woul d have, undoubtedly, released him from all clai ms for military servic e. Our subject, William H., attempted to take the p lace of his fathe r, but was not permitted to do so. Aaron Jayne still liv es on the ol d homestead where he was born, in Wyoming county. He has be en a life -long Whig and Republican, and is highly respected. The moth er of ou r subject was born in Hackettstown, New York and now lives with h er h usband in Pennsylvania. Her father participated in the war of 1812. W illiam H. Jayne continued to reside in Pennsylvania until 1890, whe r e he attended district school and worked on a farm. When twenty-two ye a rs of age he engaged in wagon making, and subsequently conducted a s tone q uarry ten years. Having learned the trade of a carpenter he ca me to Spoka ne, Washington, and six months afterward went to Davenport , having, meanwh ile, brought out his family from Pennsylvania. He b uilt the greater numb er of the finer residences in Davenport. Mr. Ja yne has served as a memb er of the city council, and as school directo r. He has three brothers a nd six sisters; Alexander, a farmer livin g ten miles north of Davenport; L ewis and Wilbur, in Wyoming county , Pennsylvania, farmers; Phoebe A., wi fe of Peter Leipham, living nea r Davenport; Sarah E., wife of Elmer Evan s, engineer and sawyer, livi ng at Davenport; Ada, deceased, who was the wi fe of David M. Glasgow , a sketch of whom appears elsewhere; Fannie, wi fe of H. C. Smith; Jo sephine, wife of Henry McMickens; and Resetta, wi fe of Elmer Shannon . The last three are in Pennsylvania. June 1, 1872, in Wyoming county , Pennsylvania, Mr. Jayne was marri ed to Augusta P. Russell, a nativ e of Russell Hill, Pennsylvania, where s he died November 15, 1881. S he was the daughter of Wilbur and Susanna (Sm ith) Russell, the forme r a native of Windom county, Connecticut, the moth er of Wyoming count y, Pennsylvania. The Russell family has been distingui shed in Americ an history, and has furnished several governors of the north eastern s tates, while they are prominently connected with the bench and b ar a t the present time. Wilbur Russell at the age of sixty-five enlist e d in the Civil War and served one year, dying from the exposure and ha rds hips incident to the campaigns. He was a noncommissioned office r in Compa ny B, Fifty-second Pennsylvania Volunteers. The second marr iage of our subject took place in Wyoming county, Penn sylvania, whe n he was united to Sarah J. Evans, who was born there. She w as the da ughter of Zera and Hannah (Place) Evans, natives of Pennsylvani a. Mr s. Jayne has two brothers, Elmer and Charles P.; and three sister s, A lvira, wife of John Woodruff; Ella, wife of Frederick Ferris; and Do r a, wife of Wilmot Furman. Our subject has three children by his fir st wif e, Susie, wife of W. J. Jayne; Stephen O., a graduate of Pullma n colleg e, and a civil engineer at Davenport; and Towner S., also a g raduate of Pu llman college and a druggist at Davenport. Two childre n have been bo rn to the present Mrs. Jayne, Stanley E. and Augusta, b oth residing at hom e. Mr. Jayne is a member of the I. O. O. F. and K . P. Politicall y, he is a Republican, though not active. He is a me mber of the Methodi st Episcopal, and his wife of the Baptist church.

Her birth w as correct with what I had but Carste ns' was off a few years. I wonder w ho first initiated stating his bir th date. I seems that a church record wo uld be more correct than han d me down dates.
